In this blog, I will talk about Barriers in the Adoption of Public Cloud Platforms like Microsoft Azure.
Microsoft Azure is a public cloud platform. It means it is a technology that has computing resources available in data centres around the world, which are accessible over the Internet.
Interestingly, the very first question which everyone has in their mind (which they say is related to Security) – Can a public Cloud Platform keep my data and applications safe? It means what about Security?
The answer to this question, which I generally give whenever asked, that it’s not about Security. It is all about Trust because let’s say if we are running our own data centre, then we are responsible for every network and infrastructure related settings, and that everything is safe. But if we are hosting our application in public cloud platforms, it will their responsibility to take care of all such things.
So, start trusting the Public Cloud Provider, like Microsoft. Start trying small things and later on the trust can be built. People always say that they will not put their critical data in public cloud, but at the same time, same people share those critical documents on Dropbox or Google Drive.
The other question which I want to address here is – Will public cloud datacentres be up when they are needed? This question is related to Availability
I will say we should not compare the cloud platforms uptime, means how perfect they are. Infact, we should compare their uptime with our own data centres, because they will be at-least as good as our own promises with financial penalties. If there are failures, there are financial penalties. There are SLAs too.
Many people ask me that whether Microsoft Azure and Office 365 are same. They also have a confusion in Azure and Office 365 certifications and its related resources. In other words, people have confusion in understanding that what Azure and Office 365 is.

How to sync or connect Local Active Directory with Azure Active Directory (Office 365)

4 points which I want to highlight are as follows:-
- Will the accounts which are disabled in local AD be synced to Office 365 ?
Ans – Yes, the accounts which are disabled in the local AD will be synced to Office 365, however they will be in blocked state which means they will not be able to login in any O365 applications, unless they are enabled.
- How to merge two same accounts which are their on local AD as well as in Office 365?
Ans – To merge the accounts, you need to update the “proxyaddress” attribute in Local Active Directory with the email address of the user which is available in Azure AD (Office 365). For updating the proxyaddress attribute, go to user properties and click on “Attribute Editor”. Follow the below convention to set the value:-
E.g. – SMTP:firstname.lastname@example.org
- Is there a control panel of some type that allows us to force a synchronization of accounts and passwords, or is it set to a schedule?
Ans – The software Azure AD Connect, will automatically schedule itself for every 30 mins of sync.
- Before we perform the live account sync, which password (on-premise or Azure) will take precedence?
Ans – On Premise password will take precedence.
